I graduated from University in June 2016。
I applied to many jobs and got rejected by most。
Then, one day I got a call。
“Hey Adeel, thanks for coming to the interview last Friday。 Is this a good time to talk?” said the hiring manager。
“Yes” I replied。
“We were really impressed with your interview and would like to extend you an offer。”
As soon as I heard this…I got excited!
I stood up from my desk, climbed on top of my chair and yelled out, “THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER…I GOT THE JOB!!”
It was a normal office job, I wrote emails to our partners in the local council, spoke to customers over the phone, and took meeting notes for my boss。
I made sure I presented well and sometimes worked outside of work to prepare for the following day and make everyone‘s life easier。
One day, I came into work 10 minutes late。
The walk from the office door to my desk wasn’t normal that day。
I could sense the judgment and the eyes watching me。
Soon after, I was pulled into a room by my manager and asked to explain myself。
“The bus arrived late。 I‘m sorry, it won’t happen again” I swiftly responded。
I was quick to apologize and acknowledge my mistake。
That is when I learnt the biggest unspoken rule in the corporate world。
Nobody cares how late you work, but everyone will notice how late you arrive.
